Destination Wedding Planning: Behind the Scenes at the TLN Honeymoon & Destination Wedding Summit

The first week of January, I traveled to Curaçao to attend the TLN Honeymoon & Destination Wedding Summit hosted by Travel Leaders Network (TLN). The experience spanned five days, beginning with a welcome event on the first night, followed by three full days of training, and wrapping up with departure on day five. In my case, I was heading straight to Orlando for a cruise, which made the week feel like a whirlwind in the best way.

Although we were based at Sandals Royal Curaçao, the summit itself focused on destination weddings as a whole, not just one resort. We learned about a wide variety of locations, suppliers, and wedding styles, which gave a much broader perspective on what couples can choose when planning a wedding away from home.

Destination Wedding Planning Insights From Real Wedding Professionals

The training combined classroom sessions, meetings with resort wedding teams, venue tours, and a mock wedding. Hearing directly from the teams who plan these celebrations every day was incredibly helpful, especially learning about the different packages available and how customizable they truly are.

One of the biggest surprises for me was how much control couples actually have. I had always assumed destination weddings followed a fairly fixed template, but in reality, nearly every detail can be adjusted to fit a couple’s vision, priorities, and budget.

Reception for wedding

Watching a Wedding Come to Life

The mock wedding was easily the biggest wow moment of the week.

Seeing the ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception move smoothly throughout the resort made everything click. Guests transitioned naturally from one space to another, with beautiful seating areas along the way and no long walks between locations. It was clear that every step had been carefully planned to keep the experience comfortable and enjoyable.

From a guest perspective, it felt effortless. From a planning perspective, it was obvious how much coordination made that possible.

Why Early Destination Wedding Planning Matters

A key takeaway repeated throughout the summit was how important it is to secure dates early. Popular venues and time slots can fill quickly, and waiting too long may mean losing preferred options or needing to compromise.

Planning ahead gives couples the greatest flexibility with venues, travel arrangements, and guest accommodations.

Discovering Curaçao

This was my first time visiting Curaçao, and the island left a strong impression. It is incredibly colorful, especially in the downtown shopping area where art appears in unexpected places. The overall vibe feels vibrant and welcoming without being overwhelming.

Another practical benefit for weddings is that Curaçao sits outside the primary hurricane zone, which can provide extra peace of mind when planning an event far in advance.

We also had an afternoon off during the summit, and I chose to take an island tour, which was a great way to see more of the destination beyond the resort.

Why Destination Weddings Appeal to So Many Couples

Destination weddings tend to be more personal and intimate than traditional large events.

They are especially appealing for couples who want to elope or celebrate with a smaller circle of family and friends. In many cases, they can also be more cost-effective than hosting a large wedding at home.

The focus shifts from putting on a big production to creating meaningful time together.

What This Destination Wedding Planning Training Taught Me

Hearing directly from resort wedding teams about their packages and options gave me tools I can use immediately with clients. There are far more choices available than most couples realize, and having guidance can make the planning process feel manageable instead of overwhelming.

Seeing a wedding unfold from start to finish reinforced how important thoughtful planning is for creating a celebration that feels relaxed rather than rushed.

Who Destination Weddings Are Perfect For

Based on what I saw, destination weddings are ideal for couples who want something more personal than a traditional ballroom event. They work especially well for smaller guest lists, elopements, or celebrations focused on shared experiences rather than a single formal day.

For many couples, it is not just about where they get married. It is about creating memories with the people closest to them.

Final Thoughts

Spending five days immersed in destination wedding planning at the TLN Honeymoon & Destination Wedding Summit was both inspiring and eye opening. The combination of a welcoming kickoff event, intensive training, real-world demonstrations, and time to explore made it an incredibly valuable experience.

Seeing the level of thought, coordination, and flexibility behind these celebrations reinforced why professional guidance can make such a difference.

If you are considering a destination wedding and are unsure where to begin, having someone walk you through the process can make everything feel smoother and far more enjoyable.

I am excited to use what I learned to help future couples create celebrations that truly reflect them.
